Some progress on my horses.
I have completed the Cheval Bayart, the Unicorn and Sleipnir. Although, the last I am not satisfied with and I will be remaking it next week. The two others have been donated to charity and I forgot to take a picture of the Unicorn. (I hope to take a pic the day they will be auctioned)
I have also completed the last of the series, which I'm happy with.

Here is the Cheval Bayart, will be auctioned this coming Sunday.

The Sleipnir, which I'm showing only the head, the only part that I liked in the piece. I will be redrawing it in a different way.

I should make more hands & guns studies instead of this. More characters. I will never be done portraying all my characters, even less since I get new ones every week. Never ending story. Why? Why?

Found a good thumb for maybe a polished version of the Nocturne. It's a horse-like smoke device creature.

Here polished version of the Diabolic hound, scout creature with multiple eyes.
It smokes too, but in lesser quantity. There are probably a couple Nocturnes behind which smokered the area.

I enjoyed that movie.
I thought I'd draw a Gemma in a style close to the movie's, but I can't bring myself to make anime style lines. So I made something of my own, just flat colors, no lines, and pen tooled hair, sort of fake anime style.
Then I made some eye candy.
So very different than what I usually show, I don't usually show my small candies. I made this one a big candy just to show you.

Not school studies, but painting studies!
I don't like to draw something I do not understand.
So between heavy schoolwork I found myself a little time to spend on working my drawing weaknesses... Hands and guns.
So all these are plain photo studies to help me learn and render hands holding guns. I'm looking also at different documentation on gun anatomy and interesting videos on Youtube to better comprehend the weapons, and any help or further information on my subjects is very welcome.

During the past two months I worked on completing some private commissions that were on my list. That included four character portraits on one part, with two of them that I produced back in, I think, 2009, and two others which I painted last summer. No surprise that the process put into the paintings were very different.
On request of the client, they were printed on photo paper, which I don't usually do, and the result was extremely pleasing. I liked the pictures so much more on paper than on the screen, I almost kept them for myself! Haha.
I took a shitty picture of them, just as a souvenir. Doesn't reflect the quality of the prints.

My last vacation was spent in Seattle, at West Coast PAX, something I attended for the first time. It was glorious! Seattle is an amazing city, Seattle people rock and PAX was pure epicness.
When I arrived at the convention center with my brother, we swam through a flow of nerdy nerds with red badges, a horde of sexy cosplay chicks and a Guild Wars 2 truck playing the game epic music.

We visited the exhibition, didn't play that many games but attended glorious lectures, met the Arenanet live team, eating cookies of purity and simply being awesome. Since I'm a big Guild Wars fan, this was a really enjoyable time.

(For those who play GW too, my pseudo in-game is R O D I A.)

Then we went off to more lectures, including "Submitting for Success: Tips to Develop a Freelance Illustration Career", with D&D, Wizard of the coast art directors, which started elegantly with a full-screen Youtube video of the techno-viking.

Followed up by epic sax guy, which they stopped after five minutes. Geeks all have the same culture...
The actual lecture was very enlightening, they all were, and always super funny. I'm glad they did this, because from now on each time I'll see or hear an epic sax guy reference, my head'll fill with all the memories of 2011PAX, which are only great.

Saturday started with a depressing line in front of the Guild Wars 2 booth, fifty seconds after the opening of the exhibition, which dissuaded us to pursue our quest of getting a T-shirt, but we lined an almost hidden Ncsoft booth where we played the GW2 demo, which is awesome. This game is gonna be something. I think this time I'll take my time, I'll read all the dialogues and look at all the details they have put into it. I don't want to to finish when it'll come out, I want to enjoy every single pixel and bit of story.
I also liked their promotional art, btw, it was kinda unique in the middle of the others.

On Sunday just before we left for the airport was Arenanet Portfolio review where three concept artists were present, including Kekai Kotaki, whom I briefly met to show my work. We shook hands, didn't talk much, he started looking at my stuff intensely until he spoke: "any question?". Scribbled something on paper really fast to illustrate his answer to my questions and I found him very straightforward, which I appreciate. No extra talking. Ended with his hand open waiting for my business card, impatient almost like an order, which I found totally hilarious.
Most memorable moment for me.

Left with a Kotaki-signed GW2 artbook, no better ending, I find. I just wish I met more players! Maybe next year. : )

Hey,
Seems like some update is needed on this blog despite the art.
First of all, I was admitted at Saint Mary's College of California for Fall 2011 with a nice scholarship. I hope these two years will be an enriching experience.http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
Although the main event of this summer was this 5 units Human Anatomy class I took, by far the most hardcore class I ever experienced. I spent the summer surrounded with nurses and organs, the course was extremely intense and, since I'm very interested in anatomy I found it fascinating. It was hardcore, it was hilarious, and we dissected human cadavers. And I succeeded, which relieves me much.

There was some more publications of my art in different art books recently, my art piece was selected in the New Era book from SlashTHREE, available for sale herhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gife: New Era
I have also three works published in the Artbook CFSL.net 05.
And my Dragon Cat painting was included in DragonWorld, "120 dragons with advice and inspiration from 38 international artists".

I don't like to write news like this, I always forget about it.

Anyway, the Vampire XIII from the vampire series, drawing dicks in the sand while waiting for a job interview. Hopefully into a book with the others, someday.

If I could sneak into their world with a camera on my shoulder, I would record a crazy amount of casually dumb conversations, awkward moments and epic failures. I wish I have later the skills and maturity to paint these kind of scenes and succeed at sharing the awkwardness and subtle humor of these moments. I do not know yet how to create such things. All my stuff is only, poorly and silently serious.

Kenshin

I've been reading (no, not Kenshin) a most excellent japanese comic these days. It's the Vagabond series by Takehiko Inoue. I'm not even done with the whole series but it's already blown my mind.
Kenshin is an entertaining series but it's not something we can compare. Although I was interested into depicting the Kenshin characters into a style closer to Inoue's, or something very close to reality, and got myself into the exercice.
In greys I have my interpretation of Aoshi Shinomori (left) and Hajime Saito (right) based on Nobuhiro Watsuki's interpretation. They are so far my favorite characters from that particular series, and I was interested by the description of the actual person who has been Hajime Saito too. (I only read over Wikipedia though, I don't know much)

I tried my new brushes and a different approach to work on Kenshin, more of a relaxed technique, no tedious detail work on this.

I started gouache a couple weeks ago for my class, and I don't really like it. I hated it at first, now I'm at mu fourth try and I'm getting used to it. My fourth try is a portrait of my brother Seb, and it's also my first painting in gouache that I really like. The assignment was to do a portrait with hand on toned paper, sized 18" by 24" at least, so here it is.
The paper is a light cold blue, not white. I tried to make the pic colors as accurate as possible.

My latest oil painting work in progress.
I have been trying wood panel for my oil panel recently and I enjoy it. Despite the expensive aspect, it's nice to sand it and guesso it myself, the surface is very fine and smooth for details and allows me to work on smaller format. It feels just like digital, in my opinion, really close. Really cool. : )

So I finally finish this everlasting work in progress painting. It's about two of my oldest characters in one of my favorite places of my head.
I spent way too much time and effort on this, trying to get the composition right. It was first vertical, focused only on the characters, it was boring and flat. I broke it down, moved the horse around to place the elements in perspective, create a gigantic horizontal composition... And broke it down, too. Made a square. I always go to squares... Added another horse and details for depth, and well, after three months of work and hard thinking, it's there. And it's been rejected from the CGSociety galleries because it "didn't met the standard of quality", was not considered a complete piece and was bad enough to pay a visit to the WIP section.
Oh well. I guess I'm not hanging over CGSociety anymore.

I'm not happy of anything right now, but considering this scale of unhappiness, I'm not unsatisfied by this work. I think it works. It's descent. It's not too boring. The characters are who they are, and I'd probably be the person taking the picture at this moment when I distracted the conversation they where having on serious business.

Hey there,

It's been a while. I got to show you some of the stuff I've been working on, but first, wanted to say I've been admitted to St Mary's College and will enter in Fall 2011. Makes me pretty happy. 2011 is starting nice for me! I hope it does for you.

I also have three artworks selected for the Artbook CFSL n°5. Which is cool. Not the works I expected to be picked, but whatever. I guess they have their specific style they want to keep through the book, and most my recent works don't fit this style.

I updated my online portfolio again, I will probably update my print shop soon because I have made some traditional printmaking art that I will be selling. I have to make nice scanning for all these.
I also have an oil painting that is finished, that I will try to sell. Though I'm not sure about shipping this, it's quite a large one. Maybe I try to sell it in a show around here so I don't have to go through a crazy expensive shipping.

He looks so cute. This is my little vampire printing experimentation. I had drawn him in Printmaking class (coincidental) with ink on paper, and had to glue three sheets of paper to complete his body, and once folded it stood up on my desk very nicely, and I thought "hey, that looks like a cool flat sculpture". xD. So I scanned it, painted it from front and back and made it print as an experimentation. Although my printer couldn't make it both sides, so he just printed on two different sheets and had someone else to glue them on top of each other.
I had then to use my copper plate burnisher to fold the paper. xD And it didn't like it. (That's why the paper is torn on the back view... Poor, he looks so sorry)
Anyway. Seeing it in my hands made me want to correct the painting, and you can see the final work right there!

My friend Ben (Alias FightingFailure) is making a toy of his creature design Brimly. I love this little thing and I wish it get selected to be sculpted as a figurine. But people have to vote him up so this can happen: PatchTogether Brimly!

Hey,

It's been a while since I updated my blog. I've been busy with end of school and papers to be able to make a summer internship as concept artist, which I'm doing now and much enjoying.

SlashTHREE's 14# artpack was released, called Cirque Des Couleurs and is most amazing and colorful. My entry got featured, which is maybe the most colorful piece I've done so far. It's just fun stuff.

I don't know what to say, I finished my small (pitiful?) 3D animation for my school, it's not what I wanted to do and I can't take the next class in autumn, so I'll have to wait next-next semester to make something more elaborate.

Hey,
I've been playing arround with Maya for almost one semester now, projects are due in two weeks. I have my little city portion finished (it's more than what is expected in the class, lol, level is pretty sadly low), and Baâl is ready and rigged and weight painted so I'll start animate soon.
I won't have Bill ready to animate he's not even modeled yet, we have so few time left, so they won't play together in the animation, Baâl is gonna be a POOR LONELY BOY. But I'll keep finishing Bill by my own, I'm trying new stuff and making him high-poly. It's starting fairly good for my first try.

And here is Bill's WIP, head is more avanced than his body, lol.

Ho, I like to make dragons aswell. Haven't been focused so much on them during all these years.
Quick doodle with no pressure, tablet unhappy with me.
This dude is called Izir, he's an old creature and is protecting his very precious fortress-city, a city with a lot of people, called La Noire (Meaning The Black One) it's the second greatest city of the country and is under invasion.

After my classes and commissions I hope I find some time to work more on that kind of sketch, make a real background and such. And I always enjoy working on big pissed monsters.

I haven't done much update for a while. There have been a few new paintings but I don't feel like put them in. Maybe later. They're on my other websites though, DA and Ter Aelis.

As I started Maya and might have to learn how to paint environment very quick I'm willing to make my next work a "real" composition. Ya. With background and accessories. I'm sick of my characters+white background, I did this too much these days. So I'm gonna work on something more difficult and more complete this time.
For the occasion I remembered how usefull it is to sketch with hard brush, that's good thing. I hope I'm gonna be less lazy this week.
So here is a potentially next compo.

Tell me what is in this glass jar on the left. Someone proposed an alien (you know, the hand thing that sucks your face and put a baby alien inside your body)I think it's a good idea. But there could be something else.

I've been working lately on exploring the 3D tools, Maya and Zbrush and animation. I've got a very cool but slow class on maya and low poly animation and I'm learning Zbrush on the side. I've been thinking about doing a comic on these characters and a recent meeting with the ILM crue decided me to work on that direction. Because if I'd do a comic I would want an almost reallistic look to it (most as I can) but I don't want to spend my whole life on it so I thought I'll make 3D models of the characters and landscapes to help me do it.

So here it is, I just finished my first character sheet. Baâl is my main character, I'll probably do Bill as well. Baâl is a cyborg with a biologic brain and Bill is a totally pure fake human machine, he's a robot. He's made to simulate the human being and fake it but he's not a human being. They're engaging a surprise fight on the top painting right there.

He's sometimes the pilote of this awesome giant machine, which I just figured I will have to model in 3D aswell... Gonna be interesting.

During this time I've been busy with other stuff and also finished another big painting with horsemen, but I think I'll update it before I really post it, I want to rework the background.
Hey and I'm learning Maya and having fun with 3D. Tomorrow I'll do the color map of my 3D guy, he's already got the map of the head to put on. Maybe I'll try Zbrush aswell to help make the map. And some day I'll probably make a high def of him on Zbrush... Bu that's not too soon. Have to finish, color and animate the low poly version first. I really dig the 3D stuff.

I've been doing commissions and characters either for Tyraade or for myself and friends. I termined the full body portrait of my friend's character Cassiopée (right of the group image). I always like very much to paint that character 'cause she has a dress made of stars, which is kind of interesting to represent.
Three left characters are mine, two top left are the same one with the adult most rescent version and the child ressurected version. Center is my usual character (which had a little portrait done in the previous message below).

I've been also doing the full body portrait of another friend's character within the same story, called Grendelor. The owner of the character haven't seen it yet but I like how it turned out. If she wants me to make some update, I'll upload a second version, though she didn't give much precisions.
I'm liking to paint role play characters these days, it's getting easier and easier for me and each time I have to explore something (like a kind face or big boobs and hips,...)

New personal work. I've been working on not-showable-yet things for a while. This weekend was crapy and I only did writing.
Something came up last night and I today was crapy morning too, but night was good. I had fun with my bro' and finished the painting I started with his humorous help. Always fun time.

I can't find a nice title for this, though. Any idea?

Here go the sketches. He was smiling first, I liked that portrait. But I failed at painting it. I started on a too small format first, though, and couldn't get enough details for the face I re-made it after and let it turn into something slightly different. I'd like to make a little portrait of that sketchy smile though. Maybe later.

Then you've got the "detailing" part of the process too. Lucky people. I've never recorded that kind of stuff before. I hope it is helpfull in some way, or amusing to look at.

You're not seeing the final version in the movie though, I stopped after a while and decided to make some major modifications to the painting after, like adding a decorative background and to radically change the face. Now he looks more like Sough.
He pertains to the same world as the previous Winter Soldier painting in the same style and full body view.
So here they are, side by side.

Damned, I've been doing A LOT of stuff recently. Half of it I can't show because they are Tryaade artworks. Others because it is only crap, miniature design stuff, random abstract banners. Rest of it are some portraits or chara design of fiction characters of the several stories I'm building at the moment.
Also I've been writing quite a lot for these stories. Beside all that, I've had another final paper to due and some homework.

Well, there is a new WIP I started tonight. It is also a known character of mine, he's called Sough. He comes from a story I started writing a year ago, it is written in french but I guess you can read it. It is on a french speaking forum I like. The sotry is called The Winter Town Chronicle. If you speak french and you like reading, feel free to have a look.

What is cool is I recorded this. I had done a couple of pencil portraits on paper right before and I felt like painting one of them, but I rarely scan, I just do it again from scratch in Photoshop, just in case I change my mind on the look.
When I don't like a portrait I usually enlarge the canvas and start making the rest of the body, until I get the entire body. I had to resize the thing a couple of times otherwise it would be too big. It is actually 4500x8500px large, which is ok.

At this point I have to make myself a reference board. So I'll come back with that and maybe I'll record the next steps. I'm gonna have a lot of work on this. I hope you're enjoying so far. I do.

Hey I was up to paint tonight. I started three more character design for Tryaade but can't finish them before I get some feedback. So I thought about this old WIP I had in my file folder. Well it is still not finished. But I'll keep this sketchy version just in case, and maybe I'll detail and polish another version and push it very far and see which one happen to be the best.
It had a background at first but I tried the white no background and it works much better, otherqise it is very tiring kind of stuff, very too much colors. So I have a good reason to not make a background this time. : )

So my website is online and almost ready. (It is still missing the printshop page but that will come soon) Now that a have a decent online portfolio I'm gonna use this blog as a blog. /o/

And I finished the daemon last night but I also finished this fallen angel thing. I started it a while ago and decided to finish. Because I polished the previous daemon a lot I tried to keep this one sketchy and more sincere. It's called Doubted.

And I did a little character design of an old role play guy of mine, just for fun. Here he is. Random asian fictive guy. He has a heavy background though, I like him. So I made him a fresher version. First name is Tourma, last name is Ren Wei. He was born in the Gui Kingdom, Pei district. I quite redesign his clothing because I don't want to make a totally traditional asian world, so I mixed some european things with it. I would build more this world if I had more time.

Hey.
I guess there is not much female characters in my portfolio, specially nude female figure. So that is what I'm working on.
Also Arvalis proposed me to make an evil pin-up as he's doing. I made some try at that but, actually I hate pin-ups. But I'm still doing a demon female nude.
I don't like much to paint the female body, I feel restraint to soft and sweet shapes, specially if it has to be a nice body. I prefer to make strong shapes and volumes in the anatomy and I like to play with the clothing, so I have to stop myself to put black leather all over her body, lol.

Printed Portfolio

Hey.
This is the fourth version of my printed portfolio. I'm happy with it and with the printing quality, this is good and quite solid paper with a ring. Printed one face only, it containts 17 artworks pages, a cover page and a CV page.
But I made it the way I'll be able to update it without re-printing the whole thing (because it seems that I'm terrifically too productive), I already have to upadte the CV page and add one more artwork page so...
But it's cool.

Original size is 11x11 inches (28cm, square) but you have here the sample version the printer made for me that I made still as a mini-version. (7,5cm)

My Secret Agent challenge entry on CGSociety.

This scene happens virtually a couple of weeks before the agent woman actually kills this guy.
In fact she's not the one who will shoot. It's just a dream, that would have been too pretty. Also she's not a killer. She's an agent. She only planed his assassination.

In the way of her mission she taught this bad guy something he never lived before, or lived too far away. When he started to think she was a dangereous ennemy, he has already accepted his defeat. He won't do anything to stop her and let her bring his own death.
It is during this dream that he faces all his thoughts and when he decides to accept his fate.
The end was nicer in the dream than in real, for sure.

Results of the challenge: I won Best Concept Art Award for this piece. Wow!

I really liked all the winners entry for that challenge wish makes me even more happy: "Rabbit Menace" from Gonzalo Perreiro, "Unsafe Path" from Morgan Yon, "The assassination of John F. Kennedy" by Michal Lisowski were the most inspiring works.

My favorite entries didn't get awarded, though they were honorary mentioned, I've been really impressed by Chase Stone's "Standoff" and Randis's "On The Run".

I can't wait for the CGChallenge XXV. : D

Face resurch. For a character of mine. He changed a lot. If you remember my painting named Baâl that I never finished. The froggy girl with the knives at the place of the feet? Well. That's him. It's supposed to be the same person.
Well I was not sure of it's appearance when I first painted it, what I'm sure about it is it's insane nature.
This time I wanted it all in white and something. So I made him albinos 'cause most of the time he lived inside a war machine body with no light on him. He is a machine body too like this, he just got some human skin. This body is kind of adaptative and evolving machine I supposed he was not albinos at first but he turned into when the time passed inside his armor body.
He has no gender.

I'm crazy of this song, these days. (the last Smashing Pumkins's version) I'd like to do something from it, so this is a concept piece for what I've in my head for now. I'd like to mix 2D painting and 3D art to make it, and make it in collaboration with my brother.
